Ted Dwyer's Show Jumping in Australia
Ted Dwyer first published his book “Show Jumping in Australia” in 1973. He has now published an updated edition which covers from the early Nineteen Seventies to 2004.
In this new edition, Ted not only writes about the history of showjumping in Australia, but takes the time to catalogue Show Jumping in Asia, which he does in Chapter 5. Ted has been coming to South East Asia since the 70’s to run seminars on course designing. He was also the course designer for the Xanthus Showjumping Open series from 1991 – 1994, the 2nd and 4th Asean Showjumping Championship and the 1995 Chiang Mai South East Asian Games. Many South East Asian personalities are mentioned.
It was through his good offices that we were able to catch the attention of World Cup director Max E Amman in 1996, which resulted in a presentation being made to the World Cup committee at the Volvo World Cup Finals held in Geneva in April that year.
As Coordinator of the Pacific League of the FEI World Cup, Ted ran it from inception in 1978 till his retirement 24 years later. Max Ammann writes, “In trying to do a good job he may have ruffled a few feathers, sometimes. But the work was done, extremely well done. I cannot remember an incident when things would ultimately not go right. It helped of course that at nearly all World Cup events Ted Dwyer had a function: at some events he was the organiser, at some the Course Designer, and at some a member of the Jury.”
Ted’s history of showjumping is an interesting one. As ever, he pulls no punches. It’s a must-read for those who know Ted or anything about Australian showjumping, and interesting enough that anyone interested in showjumping will enjoy it.
